UPM-SHS Baler Aurora extension Campus was inaugurated last July 21, 2008. The inauguration was graced by Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, UP President Emerlinda Roman, Nueva Vizcaya Gov. Ma. Luisa Cuarisma, Nueva Vizcaya Rep. Carlos Padilla, Nueva Ecija Provincial consultant Ferdinand Abesamis who represented Gov. Aurelio Umali, municipal mayors and UP officials, UP Manila Chancellor Ramon Arcadio, vice chancellor for planning and development Dr. Zorayda Leopando, and Dean Jusie Lydia Siega-Sur of the UPM-SHS in Palo, Leyte.
The newly opened school was temporarily operated in the Zabali campus of the Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT), while the UPSHS building was under construction. A memorandum of agreement was signed between the UP administration and ASCOT represented by its president, Dr. Eusebio Angara.
For a start 59 students had been enrolled in the ladderized education curriculum, including 35 from Aurora, 8 from Isabela, 5 from Nueva Vizcaya, 10 from Quirino and 1 from Nueva Ecija.
The extension campus is also intended to produce graduates of medicine-related courses who would fill the void caused by the lack of health professionals in the countryside.
Angara, who initiated the establishment of the UPSHS branch here together with UP President Emerlinda Roman, said the UPSHS-Baler campus will be the first UP specialized school on health in Luzon which will serve the health needs of people not only in the host province but also in the provinces of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Nueva Ecija.
R150-million UPSHS-Baler campus will rise in a five-hectare lot in Barangay Reserva Baler, Aurora, , 230 kilometers north of Manila.. The project will be jointly undertaken by the Department of Health (DoH) and the provincial.
